About The Trojan Women　

The Trojan Women is a protest against the absurdity, violence and atrocities of war, and a demand for peace, solidarity and humanity. Actors from divided cities, as well as from Syria and Greece, take part in the play. The aim of the production is to work as a declaration, highlighting the issue of city partitioning, the division of peoples and the need for reconciliation.

The aesthetic of the performance derives from the relationship between body and myth, time and memory. This relationship brings about the fundamental existential question, “What is it about?”, a question that has motivated artists and viewers over the course of the multiple dimensions of the human enigma.

The role of Hecuba is interpreted by the legendary Greek actress, Despina Bebedeli. The Trojan Women is dedicated to the memory of Jannis Kounellis, the famous founder of arte povera, who was assigned the task of creating the artistic installation for the production.

The Trojan Women was initially a production of the Organisation Pafos 2017- European Capital of Culture, and was presented at the Pafos Ancient Odeon. In 2018, The Trojan Women was presented at the ancient theatre of Delphi, which is under reconstruction and was especially opened to host this performance in daylight, as part of the tribute to Theodoros Terzopoulos, entitled “The Return of Dionysus,” organised by the European Cultural Center of Delphi and supported by the Onassis Foundation.

About Theodoros Terzopoulos

Theodoros Terzopoulos created Attis Theatre in Delphi in 1985. He has directed Greek tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, and opera and contemporary plays of the most eminent European and Greek writers. He has directed in many theatres outside of Greece and collaborated with significant performers. Theodoros Terzopoulos and Attis Theatre have presented 2100 performances all over the world over 34 years.

Terzopoulos’s approach to ancient Greek tragedy is taught in drama academies, institutes and departments of classical studies all over the world. While a professor emeritus, he has led many workshops and lectures about his method, in academies and universities all over the world. Every year since 2013, he has been leading the international summer workshop, “The Method of Theodoros Terzopoulos,” for young performers and directors.

He has been awarded with many Theatre Prizes in Greece and abroad. Books on his working method and Attis Theatre have been published in Greek, English, German, Chinese, Turkish, Russian, Italian, Korean and Polish. The book of his Method, titled The Return of Dionysus was published in 2015 and since then has been translated into many languages.

Attis Theatre was founded in 1985 in Delphi by Theodoros Terzopoulos. Its fundamental aim is research on ancient Greek tragedy and significant plays of international drama. Over 34 fruitful years, Attis Theatre has presented 2100 performances all over the world. It collaborates with international festivals and foreign theatres as a co-producer of multilingual and multicultural productions. It promotes Theodoros Terzopoulos' acting method and it has organized 400 workshops and 50 theoretical conferences, most of them in conjunction with the most eminent drama academies. Books about Attis Theatre have been published and translated into many languages (Greek, English, German, Chinese, Turkish, Russian, Polish, Korean, Italian), and many articles and essays have been published in theatre reviews.
